Frequently Asked Questions
What is GrandioSO 4U?
GrandioSO 4U is a next-generation universal nano-hybrid composite that combines the esthetics of a premium universal composite with the efficiency of bulk-fill placement. It features VOCO’s proprietary Visual Transformation Technology (VTT), allowing up to a 4 mm depth of cure in only 10 seconds (20 seconds for shade A4), while delivering highly esthetic, tooth-like results after polymerization.
Is GrandioSO 4U a bulk-fill composite?
No. GrandioSO 4U is classified as a universal composite with bulk-fill efficiency. Unlike traditional bulk-fill materials that remain highly translucent and may compromise esthetics, GrandioSO 4U undergoes a controlled translucency-to-opacity shift during curing, resulting in natural-looking restorations.
How many shades does GrandioSO 4U come in?
GrandioSO 4U is available in five cluster shades that collectively cover all 16 classical VITA® shades, significantly simplifying shade selection and inventory management. Bleach and Opaque shades are also available.
What is Visual Transformation Technology (VTT)?
VTT allows GrandioSO 4U to be highly translucent before curing for optimal light penetration and depth of cure. During polymerization, the material becomes more opaque, achieving natural esthetics similar to layered universal composites.
What is the maximum depth of cure?
GrandioSO 4U provides a reliable depth of cure of up to 4 mm in a single increment. Most shades (4 out of 5) require only 10 seconds of light curing; shade A4 requires 20 seconds.
What is the filler content of GrandioSO 4U?
GrandioSO 4U contains an exceptional 91% filler content by weight. This extremely high filler loading contributes to low shrinkage, excellent wear resistance, and outstanding color stability.
What is the polymerization shrinkage of GrandioSO 4U?
Polymerization shrinkage is 1.44% by volume, which is significantly lower than many universal composites.
What is the modulus of elasticity?
GrandioSO 4U has a modulus of elasticity of 15.7 GPa, closely matching natural dentin. This dentin-like elasticity helps distribute occlusal stress more naturally and supports long-term restoration stability.
Can GrandioSO 4U be used for anterior and posterior restorations?
Yes. GrandioSO 4U is indicated for universal use, including highly esthetic anterior restorations and load-bearing posterior restorations.
Does GrandioSO 4U require layering or a capping layer?
No. GrandioSO 4U is designed to be placed in a single increment up to 4 mm without the need for layering or an additional capping layer.
What curing light is required?
Standard LED curing lights with an output of at least 1,000–1,200 mW/cm² are sufficient for proper polymerization.
Is GrandioSO 4U radiopaque?
Yes. GrandioSO 4U offers extremely high radiopacity of approximately 900% aluminum equivalency (Al), allowing excellent visibility on radiographs and aiding in the detection of margins and secondary caries.
What bonding agents are compatible with GrandioSO 4U?
GrandioSO 4U is compatible with all resin-based or methacrylate-based adhesives. VOCO recommends Futurabond U, which supports self-etch, selective-etch, and total-etch techniques.
Is GrandioSO 4U suitable for pediatric dentistry?
Yes. GrandioSO 4U can be used in pediatric dentistry, particularly for permanent teeth and restorations where reduced chair time is beneficial.
How confident do you feel with where the company is going?
Yes. GrandioSO 4U is suitable for core build-ups when proper adhesive protocols are followed and adequate curing access is ensured.
Can GrandioSO 4U be heated?
Yes. GrandioSO 4U is compatible with composite warming devices, which may improve flow and adaptation without negatively affecting material properties.
What are the clinical advantages compared to 2 mm layered composites?
GrandioSO 4U reduces placement time, minimizes technique sensitivity, simplifies shade selection, and maintains excellent esthetics and mechanical performance without traditional layering.
What cavity classes is GrandioSO 4U indicated for?
GrandioSO 4U is indicated for Class I–V restorations, including anterior esthetic restorations and posterior load-bearing cavities.
